Certification Program
Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies is pleased to announce that we’ll be offering a six-week Cultivating Emotional Balance Teachers’ Training (CEBTT) July 18 - Aug. 24, 2010 in Phuket, Thailand, taught by Dr. Paul Ekman and Dr. B. Alan Wallace. Those who successfully complete the course will receive a certificate allowing them to teach CEB. This training is intended to empower people to bring CEB into multiple venues, including hospitals, schools, and businesses. CEB workshop leaders will be able to guide others to enhanced emotional health and mental stability. One may also take the class for personal edification with no particular plans to teach but only a desire to apply the training to oneself and one's relationships.
Training Process
The training will focus on learning the theories and practices of psychology regarding emotional balance, as taught by Dr. Paul Ekman and the relevant theories and practices of Buddhism, taught by Dr. Alan Wallace, particularly focused on the cultivation of attention, insight through the practice of mindfulness, and the qualities of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity (the Four Immeasurables). The format will consist of a combination of lectures, meditation and discussion. Dr. Wallace will be in residence the entire six weeks and Dr. Ekman for the first two.
Prerequisites
It is highly recommended that applicants have a background in psychology, social work or education, and/or experience in meditation, preferably both. One also needs strong motivation to enhance skills which will allow one to help others lead a more balanced, peaceful and productive life.
How to Apply
The cost of this training is $4,065.00. for a single room and $2880. for a shared, double room. The price includes includes all teaching, housing, and meals in Phuket. Travel expenses are not included. Teachers
Dr. Paul Ekman, a psychologist, has been a pioneer in the study of emotions and their relation to facial expressions. He is considered to be one of the most eminent psychologists of the twentieth century. The character Cal Lightman of the television series "Lie to Me" is loosely based on him and his work.
He is the author of Emotional Awareness: Conversation with HH Dalai Lama and Paul Ekman;
Minding Emotions; Telling Lies; and Emotions Revealed.

Dr. B. Alan Wallace has been teaching Buddhist philosophy and meditation since 1976 and is one of the most prolific writers and translators of Tibetan Buddhism and its relation to modern science. Having devoted fourteen years to training as a Tibetan Buddhist monk, ordained by H. H. the Dalai Lama, he went on to earn an undergraduate degree, summa cum laude, in physics and the philosophy of science at Amherst College and a doctorate in religious studies at Stanford. He is responsible for developing and integrating the meditation training in Cultivating Emotional Balance. He is the president of the Santa Barbara Institute for Consciousness Studies and the Chairman of the Phuket International Academy Mind Centre.
He is the author of numerous books including Mind in the Balance: Meditation in Science, Buddhism, and Christianity; The Attention Revolution: Unlocking the Power of the Focused Mind; Genuine Happiness: Meditation as a Path to Fulfillment. and The Four Immeasurables: Cultivating a Boundless Heart.

Course Description:
Dr. Paul Ekman and Dr. Alan Wallace will both teach during the first two weeks of this six-week training, with Dr. Ekman taking the primary role during this period as he provides instruction in the theory and practices of Cultivating Emotional Balance drawn from modern psychology. During this time, Dr. Wallace will offer instruction in meditative practices for refining attention skills. During the final four weeks of this training, Dr. Wallace will first teach Buddhist theories and practices pertaining to the cultivation of mindfulness as a means for gaining experiential insight into the nature of the body, feelings, mental states and processes, and phenomena at large. This will include guided meditations and daily periods of group discussion. He will then teach Buddhist theories and practices pertaining to the meditative cultivation of loving-kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity for the remainder of the training. Participants will be expected to devote 1-2 hours daily to studying books and articles relevant to each phase of the training, attend lectures and join in group discussions, and meditate between 4-6 hours daily. During their leisure hours they will have full access to the Phuket International Academy Sports, Arts & Wellness Centre.
Housing
In terms of housing, there are both single and shared room with private toilet and shower. The building complex is new, well insulated, and air conditioned. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals will be served.
